A235, History of American Empire

Response sheet 9, for class, Tuesday

This week I am again adjusting the course syllabus, hence we will be investigating the history of the United States with respect to Cuba, since Guantanamo Bay has been in the news.  As with the cases of Greenland, Panama, and Canada, there are many angles — many imperial elements — from which to investigate this history, and we will have time to cover only a portion of a long and complex history.  Once again, our task will be to assemble a kind of briefing report to provide historical background, carrying forward, for those in positions of authority and influence.

(Do not submit any “AI” drivel.  Patience is being lost.)

1.  What are the crucial differences between the Teller Amendment and the Platt Amendment?

2.  What are your hypotheses about what circumstances were deemed to have changed between 1898 and 1901, prompting the U.S. Congress to supersede the Teller Amendment with the Platt Amendment?

3.  Tell me three amazing things about Charles Edward Magoon, whose political career intersected with Panama as well as Cuba.  Why do you choose those three things as in your view amazing, out of all the possibilities?
