A235, History of American Empire

Response sheet 17, for class, Tuesday

This week we will focus on the history of China especially as it intersected with European empires, but also with Japan, Russia, and the United States.  Meanwhile, the last couple of weeks has seen considerable reflection — at least in serious, professional media, not in disinformation outlets — on the lingering effects and consequences of the global coronavirus pandemic, first detected in China in early 2019 and swiftly thereafter around the world.  That pandemic has resulted in at least over 1.2 million deaths in the United States.

1.  All of you lived through a world-historical event when you were teenagers.  What does that mean to you, now, in the seeming aftermath, with coronavirus still present but, for now, no longer lethal?

2.  What feels to you like how the world has changed?

3.  What feels to you like how the world has NOT changed?

4.  What feels to you like how your life has changed?

5.  And what feels to you like how your life has NOT changed?
