A235, History of American Empire

Response sheet 19, for class, Tuesday

This week we will focus on American anti-imperialism, which became organized and in the aftermath of the War of 1898.  1898 saw the formation of the American Anti-Imperialist League in 1898, and its concerted efforts to influence American public opinion and the 1900 Presidential election.  What was the United States?  This question should have an obvious answer, but public debate in the late 1890s and early 1900s suddenly featured empire talk, and with it uncertainty what the United States was — or what it was becoming.

Charles Morris published an early book to steer American adult public opinion in one particular direction.

1.  How did Morris use future talk toward convincing readers to subscribe to his view of Cuba and the Philippines?

2.  What did Morris think of Cubans and Filipinos?

3.  What did Morris think the United States was?
